Dinnertime Circus
Author: Amber
Does anyone else have kids who think that dinnertime is just a big joke?
If you peek in our windows at dinnertime, you will see two boys on a bench playing “volleyball” with a third, middle one, pushing him back forth between them. You will see them kicking each other, elbowing each other, or possibly, stabbing each other with a fork.
Occasionally, you will see them getting along, giggling uncontrollably at each other’s ability to turn any sentence into one that includes or sounds like bum, poop, pee or fart. They will lay down on the bench and roll around like they’ve never heard anything so funny in their lives.
Sometimes one will be helpful and pour a drink for each of his siblings. We watch as he decides who gets which cup and explains his reasoning to each of the other children awaiting their beverage, waiting to see who will start the fight.
We have tried to deal with this in about a million different ways. We want our children to be obedient and respectful at the table. We want them to have good manners and we want them to know what is appropriate and what isn’t. We’ve seen children who have mastered this…so why not ours? I know our values are sinking in because when they are at other people’s houses they have wonderful manners. I’d love for them to practice at home too!
Do you have a dinnertime circus going on at your house? What do you do when the silliness starts?
