Book Review: Have a New Kid by Friday
Author: Amber
Some friends at Bible study were talking about the book, Have a New Kid by Friday by Kevin Leman, a couple of months ago. I didn’t put much weight in their conversation about it because I’m kind of leery of parenting books on theories/beliefs/what is best/etc. Plus, I don’t love to read about parenting because it is what I do all the time and I prefer to spend my reading time in fictional works.
A few weeks ago, one of the above mentioned friends was talking about the book again, and how her “fun day” went (fun day is the first day you implement the things that you’ve learned and in some cases the kids are quite caught off guard). What she said totally piqued my interest and I figured that I should at least read the book to see what it was all about. I was offered the book to borrow when the current borrower was finished with it, but I just couldn’t wait any longer. So I bought the book myself.
I bought this book on Saturday, read it over the weekend, started implementing the ideas on Monday and seriously, by Tuesday, I had new kids.
My four year old is a completely new child. My seven year old too. Still working on the six year old, but he was the best of them all to begin with. LOL
I love it because it is all no-nonsense parenting - just my style. There are no warnings, the kids learn fast, and it is all about mutual respect that will hopefully stay with the kids all their lives.
I’m afraid that it isn’t going to keep working, but it’s been 3 days of bliss here now (actually, 5 days) and my hubby is yelling way less and I am doing way less housework (because the other family members are ASKING to help with stuff!).
It’s an easy read and Jon got through most of it in one day (I LOVE that he chose to read it as well!).
Have a New Kid by Friday gets two thumbs up from me! It was $15.00 well spent!

My interest is definitely piqued! We could use a lot less yelling and much more respect for everyone in this house. Maybe this is something Brian and I can read together!
I’m glad it has worked so well for you guys!

interesting. I have reserved a library copy, so hopefully I’ll get to read it soon!

I’ve heard about this book from a couple of people. I’m going to pick up a copy. It sounds like it might be a lot like what I do with my kids, and I constantly have friends ask me to tell them exactly what I’m doing with my kids because they’re so well behaved (one warning, lots of respect!).
I don’t think what I’ve been doing is rocket science, and I’ve been looking for a resource I could confidently recommend.
Thanks Amber!

Sarah,
I’ve been asked the same, though my kids tend to display their good behaviour only when we are outside of our home. LOL Until now, that is!
I hope you enjoy the book!
