Broken
Author: Amber
Tonight I was listening to the Contemporary Christian TV music station as I attempted to make a dent in the mess that accumulated over the weekend.
A song came on that caught my attention because of the band’s name - Lifehouse. I sat and listened to it and I had to run to the computer to look up the lyrics.
Today I’ve felt sadness. Not my own sadness, per se, but the sadness of others. And this song just started rushing images through my head. Flashing, from one thing to another, making me feel like crying and like vomiting and just like I was spinning on a ride that was going way too fast.
Yesterday there was a horrific car accident near a town not too far from here. Four young women in two cars lost their lives, and one 6 month old baby survived. The baby was the only survivor in the crash.
How do you take a call from an officer telling you that your spouse, daughter, sibling has been killed? What do you feel when you have lost one of the loves of your life, but find out that there is still one left, who escaped the tragedy?
Seriously, how does this work? It is heartbreaking for me, and not even my story.
When I think of that baby, who has so much life left to live, and no mom to share it with, I think of Matt and Madeline and know that there can be a normal day-to-day life ahead. But even as I read Matt’s blog now, I know that life is not one without pain; without heartache, without memories that make you smile and tear your heart out at the same time…without longing for what might have been.
And it is hard for me to understand why things like this happen.

Amber,
Lifehouse is a wonderful band. We sing some of their songs in church. The lyrics are always very moving. I had a patient a few weeks ago who had lost her baby to SIDS a few years ago. When I commented that I couldn’t even begin to imagine what it is like to loose a child, sh interrupted me and said “don’t even try.” Hearing of these tragedies I a sad, but great reminder to stop moving so fast and show those around us how much we love them. i hope you have a wonderful day!
