July 27: Day Twelve

Author: Amber

July 27, 2009
Day Twelve – Winnipeg, Manitoba

The barbecue last night was fun. The weather was mostly good…can’t complain if it’s not raining, right? There were a whole bunch of people there that I haven’t seen in so long; it was great to sit around and visit. :)

Today my parents decided they’d take the boys to the beach and meet up with some friends while Jon and I were out on our “night away”. Unfortunately it turned out to be rainy, windy and cold, which is not really good beach weather, so they really just got to do a bit of beach walking. Sucks. Josh was very disappointed; he has been asking to take a trip to the beach for months now.

While that adventure was unfolding, Jon and I were enjoying a day away, childless. We started with lunch at The Olive Garden - a place that holds so many memories for me. Jon and I went there for dinner when I was sad about the length of time it was taking to conceive our first child. We went there for birthdays and for lunches and dinners with friends and family and new acquaintances from church. It was so hard to be there and so wonderful to be there, at the same time.

Our food was scrumptious, as expected, and with full bellies, we headed out to do some shopping before it was time to check in to the hotel. We wandered around the mall that we know best and Jon stood by as I bought one thing after another…two shirts, a pair of shorts and a pair of pants from my favourite store, chocolates for us to snack on later, a book that I’ve been searching for, and a few little things for the kids. No matter how much I tried to convince Jon to buy something for himself, he wouldn’t, not even some new sandals to replace the ones that hurt his feet.

We finally were able to check in around 16:00 and walked into our room to find our package all laid out for us. We had ordered a romance package that had included an in-room movie and snacks to go with it. What we found was a basket packed full - soap and lotion, red wine, Laura Secord chocolates, gourmet nutty caramel popcorn and a $60 gift card to Earl’s for dinner.

We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the hotel room for awhile, watched some TV and tried to hook up the computer (without success). We spent some time swimming and lounging about in the mineral pools in the spa area of the hotel. We were not chasing children. We were not urging children to behave. We did not even talk about our children. That has never happened before!

Dinner at Earl’s was okay. My food was a bit of a let-down after my delicious Olive Garden lunch, but Jon enjoyed his. We went for a walk after dinner, and have spent most of the rest of the evening in the hotel’s lobby (where we can pick up WiFi) getting our internet fix, and posting to this blog.

Looking forward to a good sleep tonight!
