The Obligatory Mother’s Day Post

Author: Amber

Today was the best Mother’s Day ever.

It began with a trip to my original home church*, which was wonderful and refreshing and calm and sweet.

After church, we stopped at home for a few things, stopped at Safeway for a few things, and headed off on a van adventure into the unknown. Well, it wasn’t really ‘the unknown’. It was the mountains, which we actually know quite well…we just haven’t visited them for awhile.

By the time we got to the unknown, er…the mountains, it was cloudy. Then we drove around a bit trying to figure out where the heck we were in relation to where we meant to be. Soon we were all starving and the rain was coming down hard, so we did what anyone else (I mean EVERYONE else) in the Bragg Creek area would do when it was raining. We pulled into the single strip mall parking lot. Wow it was busy. We found a pseudo-parking space and had a picnic…in our van.

Our picnic did not last long because we weren’t really in a parking spot and we were sure we’d end up with a ticket pretty quick. Also, Daniel had to pee. The sandwiches were delicious though, and we continued eating as Jon drove to a gas station to use their facilities, to get a little more gas since we had a little extra driving to do, and to ask for directions to the park we had originally set out to find.

By the time we found the picnic areas and hiking trails, the rain had stopped! We put on our coats (it is still snowy up there) and set out.

Poor Claire isn’t quite tall enough for our Baby Trekker, but we used it anyway and tried putting her in there a couple different ways.

By the time we got to the water, the sun was out! The boys had a blast throwing rocks into the water, and they found some cool ice crystals on the bank.

We walked and climbed and explored and wondered and wandered for awhile longer…

…then we took some obligatory Mother’s Day pictures and headed back to the van.

We stopped at the strip mall again, on the way out of town, so the boys could get candy from the candy shop:

The girls got none, but still were smiling because ALL the boys promised to share with Mommy.

On the way back to the van we saw a brand-spankin’-new mommy (no, she wasn’t spanking her baby…she HAD a teeny newborn) and I was so happy for her, imagining that this was her first Mother’s Day; so special! However, she probably had other children since she was on her way back to her van to nurse her babe, without her hubby, so likely he was hanging out somewhere else with an older sibling or two. Anyway, I digress…

We arrived home and I received my awesome loot for being a mommy to four sweet children. They had wrapped up some of their stuff for me, ribbons and all. I got an Easter book and a Go Fish game. Daniel made me some cards, and a shaker out of paper plates and rocks. Josh planted a Marigold for me. Andrew was sad that he didn’t have a gift for me, but I assured him that a kiss was a super special present that I couldn’t wait to get.

It was a great day. I loved the van trip, I loved the lunch, I loved the rain and the kids were so well-behaved. I am glad I got to see old friends and acquaintances at church this morning. Today rocked.

*It was my original home church where I accepted Jesus as my personal Savior. I brought Jon there before we started dating and he continued to come as our relationship grew. I hung out there with friends and family. Jon and I were both baptised there and were married there. We travelled near and far on music tours with groups from there. One of my bridal showers was there, and we attended there when Andrew was born. Andrew and Josh were dedicated there as well. Returning to that building is like going home.
