Spin Cycle: The Great Outdoors

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

out·door·sy (out-dôrˈzē, -dōrˈ-)
adjective
Informal

1. Associated with the outdoors: outdoorsy hobbies such as fishing.
2. Showing a liking for the outdoors: “backpackers, mountain climbers, cross-country skiers, and other no-nonsense outdoorsy types”.

This is not me. I am not outdoorsy, and am definitely not a ‘no-nonsense outdoorsy type’ (whatever that might mean). I would much MUCH rather be inside most of the time. I like being inside looking out of open windows, enjoying the breeze while I relax, sprawled on the couch or going about my housework-filled day.

When I think of the great outdoors, I think of camping. Pretty much everyone I know, camps. They love camping. They love hanging out at their cabins and lakes. They love hiking and biking and boating. It almost makes me want to try again…to like it too…to give my kids the experience. Almost.

I grew up camping often, and it was horrible. I saw bears in the trees at night. There were bugs everywhere. The smoke from the campfire made me choke and the days were long and boring. I would beg to sleep in a vehicle at night, to feel safe, and each one of those nights was long and cold.

I camped with my grandparents, I camped with Brownies and I attended summer camps. I even camped with a friend and her family one year. And it was always the same; it always gave me that homesick pit in my stomach that made me feel ill, depressed, scared and tired.

Last time I camped, Andrew was about 5-6 months old; we stayed over one night at my parents’ campsite on our way to somewhere else, and while the day wasn’t so bad, the night was awful. Andrew was awake and crying all. night. long. I tried to keep him happy, but nothing worked. I am pretty sure I nursed him for 6 hours straight in an effort to shut him up make him quiet so the whole campground didn’t have to hear a crying baby all night. It didn’t work, and my breasts actually hurt a little right now, just thinking of it.

When I hear camping stories from friends and family now, there is never a negative story. There seems to be a huge emphasis on alcohol, which is just not really Jon’s or my thing. We do indulge in the occasional drink, but to spend a whole evening sitting and drinking around a fire…it’s not appealing. What else do you do when you camp (Seriously, I’m asking - please leave me a comment)?

Perhaps in the future I’ll be able to borrow a huge camping trailer with a toilet and door that locks and have another go at this camping thing. Maybe I’ll learn to love the great outdoors. Perhaps that love will come if we ever make it to the new home we’ve been planning to move to for years now (it’s on an acreage in the country), and then it will be like we’re camping every day (trying not to *shudder* at that thought).

I’m such a city girl. I love to admire God’s beautiful creation from my windows, checking out the great outdoors from the awesome indoors.

The Spin Cycle comes to you from Sprite’s Keeper.

Happy Birthday Andrew!

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Andrew is our littlest middle little. Four years ago he was pulled out into this crazy world and he didn’t make a peep. Oh no, wait, that was a different baby. Andrew cried HARD and won my heart immediately. :) Here’s the long story of his arrival:

On Friday, January 27, I saw my doctor for my regular weekly checkup. All was fine, but I was miserable. And I let my doctor know it. At the end of the appointment, she offered to check my dilation and effacement. She found I was 1-2 cm dilated and 70% effaced and told me about stripping membranes. I was already familiar with this and told her I was interested in having it done. I was a little crampy for the rest of the night, but felt normal.

I expected (and hoped!!) that the babe would arrive soon, so we planned to take Daniel and Josh shopping and out for lunch on Saturday, and to just have a great family day together. But things didn’t turn out that way.

Around noon on Saturday, I realized that I hadn’t felt the baby move in a long time. I had some lunch and rested in bed for an hour and a half, counting movements. Three movements, four…There should’ve been 10 in two hours, and it wasn’t happening. With stories of women who lost their babies at term swirling in my head, off to the hospital we went.

Jon and I spent an hour and a bit in triage, with me hooked up to the monitor and Jon reporting on what he saw. The baby’s heart was beating good and strong. And there was plenty of movement…five already after only 18 minutes. Some contractions that registered good and strong, even. All looked good. There was one thing that was somewhat worrisome though; my blood pressure had continued to rise, bottom number now in the mid-90s. I was sent home, with strict orders to rest.

On the way out of the hospital we stopped to visit my mom (she’s a nurse) and she took my blood pressure again…125/97. She said I should go back upstairs and tell them not to let me go home like that. I told her I wasn’t going to do that, and convinced her to take Jon’s blood pressure too, which turned out even higher than mine. Jon and I went home, called Jon’s parents to ask if they’d keep the boys overnight so we could rest, and spent the evening in bed watching movies.

Just after 1:00 am, I awoke to contractions. They were uncomfortable enough that I couldn’t go back to sleep, with some actually painful enough that I could only get through them on my hands and knees. In my journal, I recorded some feelings of fear:

*****
“I am a little worried; I also woke up with a monster headache, which likely means that my blood pressure is even higher than it was before. Not good. I am feeling a little nauseaus and seeing a few spots, so I am trying to decide when I should wake Jon to take me back to the hospital. Seems my body just can’t handle labour.

”At this point though, really, I am ready to go in and consent to a c-section. I am scared for my health and the baby’s and I don’t want to have the long drawn out hospital stay that I had after having Daniel (I was in the hospital for 6 days with high bp and nurses watching me for a stroke…).

”Anyways, I am trying to balance my excitement about getting the baby out with my ‘mommy instinct’ saying something might not be right. Plus, I am concerned about having a half-asleep dr. cutting me open. I wish my water would just break and then I would have a good solid reason to go to the hospital in the middle of the night.

”Somehow, I am also still somewhat in denial that I am even having another baby…I just can’t imagine it. And THAT freaks me out ’cause it makes me think that on some level there is something wrong with the babe. This is craziness.”

*****

At 3:00 am things really started to pick up. My contractions were coming 9-11 minutes apart as I sat at the computer, or a regular 1.5 minutes apart if I was up walking around. I tried to keep walking, but it was exhausting and painful. I journaled:

*****

“holy crap!! How do people get through natural childbirth?? I am dyin’ here.

This is scary and exciting…I never got to do this with any of my other pregnancies. I’m getting a tad worried about that scar on my uterus though…

Okay, going to walk around and drink my water. I’m feeling a little nauseaus; maybe I’ll get a bucket to carry around too.”

*****

I walked until 4:30 am when I just couldn’t anymore. I decided to go back to bed (don’t know what I was thinking), but woke Jon up almost immediately with my moaning. Laying down slowed the contractions to one every five minutes, but it was too uncomfortable for me to just lay in bed through them. We decided it was time to go to the hospital.

We arrived at the hospital around 6:00 am on Sunday, January 29. I was checked for dilation and effacement; 2-3 cms and 90% effaced. The thought of going through another 7-8 cms of labour scared me. I didn’t think I could handle the pain, especially since I had decided to forego any medication that might hide signs of my uterus rupturing. I asked for a c-section.

No one argued with me. My blood pressure was still high. I had had two previous c-sections. The babe was doing fine. The nurses started the bloodwork and paperwork. The anaesthesiologists came to talk to me. The OB and his resident (?) told me the risks of the surgery. By 7:00 am, I was walking into the operating room.

Jon waited outside and “suited up” as I was prepped. Let me say it is HARD to sit through a spinal during contractions that are not spaced far apart. Everything went smoothly, Jon came to sit by me and the surgery was started.

Jon and I joked with each other as the surgeons discussed night vision and the family lives of other doctors. And there was a baby cry…

Andrew Elijah was born at 7:55 am. He was 8 lbs 6 oz and 21″ long. His apgars were 9 and 9 – a beautiful, healthy baby boy!!

Andrew cried hard, with real tears, and the surgery team called Jon to the other side of the room to see his new son. Jon brought Andrew to me and I kissed his sweet cheek and whispered to him and he calmed down instantly. And Jon and Andrew didn’t leave my side for the whole day. It was a special, wonderful day.

Happy birthday my sweet little boy. We love you much!

July 17: Day Two

Day 2 - Billings, Montana to Sioux Falls, South Dakota

07:00
Montana is beautiful. The landscape is rolling and seems to go forever.

Today we get to stick to the I-90, a bigger highway than we traveled on for most of yesterday. I think that makes a difference to our stress levels. A divided highway is a million times better than an undivided, 2-way highway.

One of our kids is turning out to not be the best of little travelers. He whines about something at least once per minute and when he gets tired of that, he begins to pick fights with his brothers.

All of the kids went back to sleep today after getting settled in the van and having their breakfast. It makes the ride so much better for us all, I think. Today is a very long day of driving - even longer than yesterday - so any sleeping they can do in the van will be much appreciated!

We saw a lot of construction that really wasn’t and many many invisible construction workers. We had to drive at 35 mph for a long stretch of highway and we don’t really know why. I have got to say…I am LOVING the 75 mph speed limit here! I think our van likes it too!

07:48
Welcome to Wyoming!

After an intense freak-out session over a beetle at a gas station, our boys decided that we needed to go back to Montana because Wyoming bugs are too BIG!

10:30
Discipline stop. One child decided that it was time to start stabbing seats with pencils and began being destructive; throwing pillows, blankets and books. This led to us pulling over so he and Jon could have a father-son chat on the grass. The boy was encouraged to leave his attitude there on the hill before getting back into the van. The rest of us snacked while we waited.

11:20
Hello South Dakota!

We stopped at the tourist rest stop right across the border and were greeted by the two sweetest ladies ever. They directed us to the appropriate bathrooms, oohed and aaaahed over our children, and showered us with gifts of colouring books and pins.

We took some pictures and let our pets kids run around. Then it was back to the van to head to Rapid City for lunch.

Jon and I took our first swigs of US Coke. It IS different, even though Wikipedia says the ingredients are the same. It just doesn’t give me that yummy Coke-y stress relief that I get at home, which I am really missing.

We tried to stop at Sonic in Rapid City, but it was full, so we continued on to Arby’s. Without thinking, I ordered an iced tea. I figured that I had had too much pop to drink and I should go for something without carbonation. Just as I was sticking the straw in, I remembered…this was probably not the ice tea that I was hoping for. A sip confirmed that. Bleh. Brewed iced tea. We ended up dumping out almost all of it; I’d say there was over a litre there (the pop serving cups are HUGE here!). Yick.

Mount Rushmore was next on the list and I can sum up the visit in a few short thoughts…

out of the way

busy

interesting…sort of

expensive

It was cool to see, but we spent way more time in the gift shop than anything. Really, how long can you stare at a rock for?

There was a town on the way up the hill that made Jon want to vomit. Way too much glitz over one little thing. Well, I guess it is kind of a big thing. Still too much glitz though!

We drove up there, saw the rocks, bought the presents and drove back down and back onto I-90.

And the rest of the day got progressively worse. Stressful, long, boring, frustrating. More construction zones that anyone can count, but nothing really going on in them. Boys that were so very sick of being in their carseats and parents that were pushed to the edge with anger and unable to do a darn thing about it.

We stopped at a beautiful park for some stress relief and to eat the McD’s that we picked up. After that, three kids were good, and one kid was beyond terrible for the next three hours to Sioux Falls.

We arrived at the hotel around 22:30 and got the kids into bed. There were a few baseball teams in the hotels in the area and many drunk loud people. Our key to the outside door didn’t work and we had to lug our luggage aaaaaaaaaall the way around to the front of the hotel from the back. It was just more of the same of the long stressful day. We were so glad to have it ending!

The Obligatory Mother’s Day Post

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Today was the best Mother’s Day ever.

It began with a trip to my original home church*, which was wonderful and refreshing and calm and sweet.

After church, we stopped at home for a few things, stopped at Safeway for a few things, and headed off on a van adventure into the unknown. Well, it wasn’t really ‘the unknown’. It was the mountains, which we actually know quite well…we just haven’t visited them for awhile.

By the time we got to the unknown, er…the mountains, it was cloudy. Then we drove around a bit trying to figure out where the heck we were in relation to where we meant to be. Soon we were all starving and the rain was coming down hard, so we did what anyone else (I mean EVERYONE else) in the Bragg Creek area would do when it was raining. We pulled into the single strip mall parking lot. Wow it was busy. We found a pseudo-parking space and had a picnic…in our van.

Our picnic did not last long because we weren’t really in a parking spot and we were sure we’d end up with a ticket pretty quick. Also, Daniel had to pee. The sandwiches were delicious though, and we continued eating as Jon drove to a gas station to use their facilities, to get a little more gas since we had a little extra driving to do, and to ask for directions to the park we had originally set out to find.

By the time we found the picnic areas and hiking trails, the rain had stopped! We put on our coats (it is still snowy up there) and set out.

Poor Claire isn’t quite tall enough for our Baby Trekker, but we used it anyway and tried putting her in there a couple different ways.

By the time we got to the water, the sun was out! The boys had a blast throwing rocks into the water, and they found some cool ice crystals on the bank.

We walked and climbed and explored and wondered and wandered for awhile longer…

…then we took some obligatory Mother’s Day pictures and headed back to the van.

We stopped at the strip mall again, on the way out of town, so the boys could get candy from the candy shop:

The girls got none, but still were smiling because ALL the boys promised to share with Mommy.

On the way back to the van we saw a brand-spankin’-new mommy (no, she wasn’t spanking her baby…she HAD a teeny newborn) and I was so happy for her, imagining that this was her first Mother’s Day; so special! However, she probably had other children since she was on her way back to her van to nurse her babe, without her hubby, so likely he was hanging out somewhere else with an older sibling or two. Anyway, I digress…

We arrived home and I received my awesome loot for being a mommy to four sweet children. They had wrapped up some of their stuff for me, ribbons and all. I got an Easter book and a Go Fish game. Daniel made me some cards, and a shaker out of paper plates and rocks. Josh planted a Marigold for me. Andrew was sad that he didn’t have a gift for me, but I assured him that a kiss was a super special present that I couldn’t wait to get.

It was a great day. I loved the van trip, I loved the lunch, I loved the rain and the kids were so well-behaved. I am glad I got to see old friends and acquaintances at church this morning. Today rocked.

~~~~~
*It was my original home church where I accepted Jesus as my personal Savior. I brought Jon there before we started dating and he continued to come as our relationship grew. I hung out there with friends and family. Jon and I were both baptised there and were married there. We travelled near and far on music tours with groups from there. One of my bridal showers was there, and we attended there when Andrew was born. Andrew and Josh were dedicated there as well. Returning to that building is like going home.
I never promised you an herb garden…
Monday, April 27th, 2009
Well, we’ve taken the plunge.
We visited the garden centre. Oy. Jon had never been before and didn’t understand my excitement over this wonderland of earth. He’s already planned to return there at least one (hundred?) more time this year.
We bought seeds. We bought plants. We bought soil and containers to grow stuff in.
We bought special grass-seed infiltrated fuzz that Jon gently placed around the yard on the muddy black spots that were carefully created last summer by our boys and their swimming adventures.
Jon and the boys lovingly folded all these ingredients together to create three beautiful planters that might (or might not) provide us wonderful fresh ingredients for meals this summer. They set up the planters in the yard excitedly anticipating the gifts that they will give us.
Then we brought the planters in, because freezing temperatures brought snow. Amazingly, there has not been a single little finger found playing in the dirt of the garden that is now clustered around our piano, in our little living room.*
I’m looking forward to using our plants to add a little something to our dinners. We’ll see how this little experiment plays out. Maybe eventually we’ll be able to grow all our food. How cool would that be?
*Now that I’ve written that statement down, we’ll see how long it remains true.
Long overdue picture post
Saturday, April 18th, 2009
I would like to incorporate more pictures into our blog, and I intended to begin putting up shots of stuff we did during spring break.
Well, that didn’t happen.
Luckily, most of our readers follow us on Facebook too (right?) and see way too many pics of us there. LOL
The rest of this post is about pictures, and from now on I’ll try to add them into posts on a regular basis.
This is Claire, in her new Yellow Sundress:
Monster Cookies, Monster Cookies, Where Have You Been?
Monday, March 16th, 2009
Not to London to visit the Queen!
We haven’t been anywhere, but we’ve been busy!
Last Wednesday, I went to a playgroup that I’d not been to in a very long time.  I made a new friend, and found that her kids are the same ages as my youngest; her oldest was born 3 weeks before Andrew and her youngest was born 2 weeks after Claire.  How great is that?!?  Looking forward to getting to know them better.  :)
Thursday, I volunteered to go on a field trip to the zoo with Josh’s kindergarten class.  The weather was just starting to get better, and it was a beautiful day!  The children were fantastic!  I watched over 4 kids as we went around the zoo, and had a really fun time.  :)  Grandpa Y took care of Andrew and Claire while I was gone, and they all had a great time too.
Friday was the day that our floor renovation began!  I took Claire, Andrew and Josh (who didn’t have school) to a playdate at a friend’s house.  I hadn’t seen my friend in so long and it was really good to catch up.  I hope to hang out with her more as the weather warms up; I kind of went into hiding for the cold and flu season and I am looking forward to start hanging out with my friends again.  My kids are looking forward to it too.
While we were at the playdate, Grandpa Y and Uncle P came over to continue tearing up our carpet and start laying our laminate.  We came home for lunch and the boys hung out in the basement, Daniel did his afternoon at school, and I wore Claire all afternoon, alternating between carriers.  When Daniel was done school, Grandma M came to get all of the boys and take them to her house for dinner and a sleepover.  The kids had a blast there and weren’t here running around underfoot, and that was a great thing!  Uncle A, Auntie B and Grandma Y came to help and hang out too - I love having a houseful of family.  :)
Saturday the kids and Grandma Y and I went to a birthday party while the men continued the construction.  We went to McDonalds and then a show at Storybook Theatre.  All of the kids had lots of fun running around, snacking and then enjoying the show.  My boys so enjoy hanging out with the friends that were there; they don’t get to see them all very often because of school, so times like this are a real treat for them!
I came home to a house that was mostly put back together.  The floor was done, our new TV was up and it was sweet to be able to sit down on the couch and put my feet up and just be.
We did church on Sunday morning, and it was the first time ever that we had to “rescue” Claire from the nursery.  She was just not happy there this week.  She was crying when we dropped her off, and then they had to call us when she didn’t stop.  Unfortunately, she felt chatty once she was in my arms, and I had to take her out of the church service shortly after I took her in.  LOL  I gave all of the church bulletin boards a good read as I walked Claire around the foyer for the morning.  After church, we met Grandma Y at Tim Horton’s for some donuts and bevvies, since she couldn’t go home right away (there was a showing of her home then).  We stopped for some groceries, came home and ate lunch, and before we knew it, it was time for Jon to run Daniel back to the church for choir.  Uncle P, Auntie K and baby Kennedy stopped in for a visit (and to finish up the floor work).  Kennedy is such a cute little sweetpea - and already a month old!!
I’ve been aching for a little break for a while now (quite a long while), so last night, my friend and I declared it “Girl’s Night” and went out for a walk and a chat.  It was so refreshing to get away; to have some time away from Jon and all 4 kids.  Since Claire’s birth I just haven’t had the time to myself that I once had, and it has been a bit wearing lately.  I was back home after about 2.5 hours, a new woman and ready for the week ahead!
Today was exciting too.  Awhile ago I signed my kids up to take part in studies on Speech Development at the University of Calgary.  I got a call two weeks ago asking if Claire and Andrew could come in to participate, since they had openings for 9 month olds and 3 year olds right now.  So, today we went.  They both did so wonderfully!  The researchers commented that the kids were delightful and complimented me on how smoothly everything went with them.  I’m such a proud mama.  :)  They said they’d likely call us again in the future, too, which is exciting for me, because I love this stuff.  Claire and Andrew each got a certificate of participation and a tee-shirt.  Andrew was so proud to pick them out.  Once upon a time I had career ambitions of becoming a Speech Pathologist, and it was the children’s language acquisition and development that got me interested in it in the first place, so this is all fun for me!
So yeah, we’ve been busy, and with Spring Break coming up, there is much more busy to be had!
Other stuff:
Daniel got his report card on Friday…he is doing great.  We’ll meet with his teacher and Josh’s at the end of this week.
Josh is learning about Islam from his best friend at school.  I think it is adorable, sweet and very interesting that kids are having these conversations with each other in kindergarten.
Andrew is working on coming out of his shell.  He is such a shy boy in new situations.  I am going to start looking into registering him for preschool for the fall sometime soon.  He’ll go to the same preschool that Josh attended last year.
Claire is crawling everywhere, pulling up, and working on climbing.  She is VERY clingy and wants to be on me or Jon constantly.  Jon is her bed in the evenings, and today for a nap.  She falls asleep so easily on his chest.  Super sweet.
Spring break starts this Thursday for Josh, and Friday for Daniel.  They have 17 days off and I am trying to fill that time up with outings and plans so that we don’t all go crazy being cooped up in the house together.  Hopefully the weather cooperates!
That’s all for now!
Claire’s first swim
Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
On Tuesday, we finally got out to a pool with our two youngest kiddos.  I don’t love swimming (ah, who am I kidding…I could use the h word when I talk of swimming…I really don’t like it at all), but it is important to me to have my kids comfy in the water, so I suck it up and go every few months.
It was Claire’s first time in a pool, and I have to say I was very excited about introducing her to the huge tub of water.  She loves baths, and I thought she’d love to play in the water.  I was right, she had fun, even smiled.  She floated on her back, on her front, and kicked her legs.  She splashed and walked holding my hands, sat and looked around and bounced through the water.
There were not many toys - just one pink ball for everyone in the pool.  The hot tub is not yet open, none of the slides or play areas are open either.  The pool was recently renovated and unfortunately we went too soon after the renovations, as there wasn’t any “park” to this waterpark.  I think Andrew and Claire had fun though, and even though Jon was not pleased that we paid $14 for this very short adventure (thank goodness for parent and tot prices), I think it was a success.
I think we will go swimming as a foursome again, when the older boys are at school and Jon has an afternoon shift.  However, we will go to the other pool, with the cool figure 8 thing.  :)
Out with Andrew
Saturday, February 21st, 2009
Today was Andrew’s date with Mommy day.  He originally chose bowling as the activity, but since the bowling alley wasn’t open until mid-afternoon, Daddy swayed Andrew’s decision a little and got him to change his date to the zoo.
From February 2009 (4)
We had a great time!  We arrived at the zoo just after 10:00am, and there was barely anyone there!  We got a great parking spot and didn’t have to stand in line to get in.  Andrew got to run and run, which he loves to do.  It was a beautiful day, warm and bright, and the air was cool and fresh.
From February 2009 (4)
Andrew only wanted to see four things, and in this exact order:  elephants, dinosaurs, zebras, giraffes.  We saw the elephants and he decided he didn’t want to see the dinosaurs anymore.  We checked out the zebras and giraffes, and he had had enough and was asking for ice cream.  So we left and drove to Dairy Queen for some treats.
From February 2009 (4)
It was a fun day.  I have to say, going to the zoo with one child (who can walk!) is absolutely a whole different thing than going with four.  Wow.  I am officially looking forward to Claire reaching this age, when we can go out as a family and not have to drag along a stroller or diaper bag for all the “just in case” scenerios.  :)
4-4-4 Meme
Wednesday, February 18th, 2009
I’ve been tagged by my friend Jennifer at Live.  Create.  Love.
The rules are…
Go into your photo archive, pick the 4th folder in the archive, select the 4th picture in the folder, and write about it. Then tag 4 other people to do the same.
Here is my picture.
From 5 months
This is Daniel, 5 months old, teething and hurting.  We bought popsicles and gave him one and got some flack from family for giving our 5-month old a popsicle.  But he liked it, and it kept him busy and happy, as well as providing entertainment for Jon and I…watching our firstborn baby eat something cold for the first time.  :)  Wow, that was so long ago (November 2002), but not really…
And now for the tagging.
